Moped Restoration

I purchased a 1976 Pacer moped with a 49.6cc engine off Facebook Marketplace, knowing it did not run. The resoration process began with an assessment of its ignition system. Upon initial inspection, I discovered there was no spark. To address this, I meticulously disassembled the moped, removing the magneto cover and flywheel to access the contact points. These points were adjusted and cleaned, yet the spark plug produced no arc. A comprehensive examination of the wiring harness revealed multiple areas where corrosion had wreaked havoc on the wires and insulation. Drawing from an online Pacer repair manual, I embarked on a complete rewiring endeavor, soldering new connections. However, the spark continued to elude me. I was able to measure current coming out of the magneto but no current at the spark plug. I concluded that the ignition coil was the culprit, prompting me to purchase a new high-tension coil, finally rekindling the ignition system. With the electronics back to life, my focus shifted to restoring the moped's frame. After painstakingly stripping away layers of paint and rust, I was relieved to find no structural rust-through. In an makeshift paint booth within a shed, I suspended the frame to ensure full paint coverage. A fresh primer layer was expertly applied, followed by a meticulous application of five layers of red enamel paint and a protective clear coat. The curing process was as crucial as the painting itself and took very long in the humid Ithaca summer.

Reassembling the moped was a thorough endeavor. I replaced the fuel line and carburetor, as their extensive fuel leaks were potential hazards. The aging chain also warranted replacement, ensuring the moped's safety and performance. The moment of truth arrived as I prepared for its maiden test ride. It took a few hearty kicks to coax the engine to life, but it got going it was good as new. The moped, now resembling its former glory 46 years later, became a testament to the build quality of the old moped and my own dedication to restoration.
